Zero-emission electric vehicle driving mode while charging

Take the world's best-selling hybrid car as an example. Add a fuel-free EV mode when charging, plus Toyota's value and durability, and you have a Prius Prime. With a staggering 640 miles of driving range, Prius Prime has everything that people love about this legendary hybrid car, and adds an estimated 25 miles of electric car driving range (when fully charged)-enough to cope with the daily commute of many American drivers distance.

In addition to silent, battery-powered driving capabilities, Prius Prime’s fuel efficiency figures are impressive. In the hybrid mode, Prius Prime LE stands out with an estimated 55 cities/53 highways/54 integrated MPGs. When fully charged, the estimated power of Prius Prime is 133 MPGe. Moreover, it is estimated that the total mileage is 640 miles. Even if the electric car with the longest range must stop and charge, the Prius Prime can continue to drive for a long time.

In the EV auto mode, Prius Prime prefers electric functions as much as possible. But in situations where it is more efficient to run a gasoline engine—such as climbing a steep slope—the extremely efficient gas engine will start.

Even with super high fuel efficiency estimates, Prius Prime can drive in unexpected ways in EV mode, including a speed of 84 mph (estimated up to 25 miles) that can be reached on battery power alone. In addition, the unique suspension adjustment makes Prius Prime show a particularly stable posture on the curve.

Most importantly, when the battery reaches a certain power reduction state in EV mode, Prius Prime will automatically and seamlessly switch to hybrid mode. Then, like other Prius models, it combines the output of the gasoline engine and the electric motor through a planetary continuously variable transmission.

It is worth noting that Prius Prime drivers do not need to invest in special and expensive home charging equipment. Using the included cable, Prius Prime can be plugged into a standard household electrical outlet. (Toyota recommends using a dedicated GFI 15A socket.) It takes less than five and a half hours to fully charge the battery using a standard 120v socket. 240v power supply can reduce this time to about two hours.

As a plug-in hybrid vehicle, Prius Prime's main advantage over EV is that it can drive without charging. For example, if you forget to plug in the power and there is gasoline in the tank, then the Prius Prime will operate in hybrid mode like any other Prius.

Prius Prime combines the highly recognizable Prius hatchback style and special elements to create a unique style. Prime is equipped with unique front and rear fascias, bumpers and lighting systems. The ultra-thin LED headlights and the large acrylic grille that complement the air intake create a more advanced EV image.

Prius Prime’s unique "double wave" rear window combines an exotic appearance with aerodynamic efficiency. Also unique to Prius Prime, the full-width LED rear combination light board leaves an unforgettable night logo, and its shape follows the contours of the spoiler and the double wave window. A full-width aviation glass panel under the rear spoiler, coupled with a standard backup camera, helps to be visible to the rear.

The windproof body and its high-strength/low-weight structure are key factors in Prius Prime’s significantly lower energy consumption. When airflow into the radiator is not needed, the automatic grille shutters are closed to help reduce drag. Another unique detail is the aerodynamic cover painted with a two-tone scheme for the 15-inch aluminum alloy wheels.

Prius Prime’s energy-saving four-way LED headlights exude an amazing night look, just like a diamond glowing at night. Thanks to the standard automatic high beams, these will not blind oncoming drivers. The system uses an on-board camera to detect approaching vehicles or vehicles driving in front, and measure the light of the surrounding environment (such as the brightness of street lights) and adjust accordingly.

Highlighting the vibrant and futuristic lines of the Prius Prime are five standard paint color choices, including classic silver metallic paint, magnetic gray metallic paint, midnight black metallic paint, titanium luminescence, and the unique blue magnetism of Prius Prime. There are also two advanced colors, supersonic red and wind chill pearls are available.

Like many current Toyota passenger cars, Prius Prime is built around the multifunctional TNGA-K platform architecture. Structural strength and exquisite double wishbone multi-link rear suspension injects Prius Prime with excellent handling responsiveness, steering feel and ride quality.

The rear suspension design allows an estimated 19.8 cu. Feet of luggage space, using the back seat backs.

The Prius Prime body uses hot stamped steel and high-strength steel extensively to achieve complex shapes that are both light and strong. Aluminum components, including the hood and brake calipers, help control the weight of the vehicle. Innovative fastening methods, such as laser screw welding and advanced adhesives, help to increase structural strength.

The lightweight carbon fiber rear tailgate further reduces weight, which also makes opening and closing almost effortless.

Prius Prime is the first Toyota hybrid car to use dual-motor drive, helping to increase acceleration in EV mode and achieve energetic driving. The system uses an innovative one-way clutch to engage the generator (MG1) and the electric motor (MG2) to obtain drive torque. This is the first deployment of MG1 for this purpose. In other Prius models, MG1 only provides battery charging, while MG2 provides driving torque and charging.

Regenerative braking recovers electrical energy during deceleration and braking and stores it in the battery, helping to reduce fuel consumption.

Prius Prime can even help optimize mileage by remembering the driver's parking patterns on frequently driven routes and suggesting when to release the accelerator. The method is as follows: Available predictive efficient driving with predictive deceleration support Collect daily driving data to predict deceleration and stopping points. Since then, when the driver passes a certain location in the database, the system will indicate when to release the throttle, and assisted deceleration can also be applied to help improve fuel efficiency.

Prius Prime’s efficiency certificate is not battery-centric; the gasoline engine itself is also a star. The 1.8-liter Atkinson cycle 4-cylinder engine is used in all current Prius hatchback models, achieving a breakthrough thermal efficiency of more than 40%, while the thermal efficiency of most modern car engines is about 25-30%.

Starting from the very high compression ratio of 13.0:1, countless details in the hybrid system help to improve its efficiency. However, like all Prius models, the Prius Prime uses regular gasoline. Other efficiency team members here include exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) systems with coolers, smaller, lighter, and quieter hybrid system water pumps, and waste heat recirculation systems that help accelerate engine warm-up.

The combined net output of Prius Prime is 121 horsepower. The role of electric motor and planetary continuously variable transmission makes Prius Prime full of vitality and responsiveness. On the highway, in EV mode, Prius Prime cruises quietly. Thanks to the sound insulation laminated windshield and front door glass, comprehensive sound insulation measures and optimized aerodynamic shape, it maintains a quiet cruiser in all driving modes, all of which help to suppress wind noise.

Regardless of the weather, Prius Prime can ensure the comfort of the cockpit while adopting technology that minimizes energy use. Heated front seats are standard on all three model levels, and the automatic climate control system uses very quiet electric compressors.

Toyota refers to the climate control system as "smart flow" because it concentrates the airflow only in the area where the occupants are located to help maximize fuel economy and comfort. The climate control system can also run without the engine running, with a heat pump that allows the system to cool or heat the cabin while driving in EV mode.

Prius Prime goes beyond everything to ensure a comfortable cabin temperature and the best EV performance in cold weather. Heat pumps can operate in weather as low as 14 degrees Fahrenheit without the engine running, while traditional heat pump systems can only operate at temperatures above 32 degrees Fahrenheit. Even when the power system is cold, the cabin will heat up quickly.

In addition, on cold days, the battery heater will be activated at the end of charging to keep the battery temperature above 32 degrees Fahrenheit, helping to ensure the best EV performance and cruising range when the vehicle is started again. On the top Prius Prime Limited, the driver can use the remote control key or smartphone app to activate the remote air conditioning system to cool the car before entering the cabin.

The instrument panel installed in the center is the design mark of the Prius since the advent of the model, and it seems to float above the instrument panel. The panel has dual 4.2-inch full-color multi-information displays, and the driver can change its content through the steering wheel control. Customizable screens include energy monitors, hybrid systems and climate control indicators, as well as a set of "eco" functions: Eco Score, Eco Saving Record, Driving Monitor and Eco Diary. Other screens provide display of driver support system, audio system content, and navigation system content.
